Navigating Life as a Business Owner with ADHD

It’s October!

It’s a month for many awarenesses, but the one I want to talk about is ADHD Awareness Month.

As a business owner with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), I wanted to take a moment to share my journey, quirks, and challenges and how I’m managing to try to survive and thrive in the world of business.

When ADHD is mentioned, you might have only thought about hyperactivity or the inability to sit still. However, there’s more to it than that.

It’s a complex neurodevelopmental condition that brings with it a unique set of traits and challenges. These quirks, often labelled as “symptoms,” can be both a blessing and a curse when running a business.

If you’re an entrepreneur with ADHD or simply curious about the experience, grab a cuppa (or your beverage of choice) and join me on this journey of navigating the entrepreneurial world with an ADHD twist.

My Personal ADHD Struggles

1. Creativity Overload: Where Ideas Flow Like a Waterfall

The Struggle

Imagine a constant stream of ideas flooding your mind. On one hand, it’s exhilarating. On the other, it’s like trying to catch butterflies in a tornado.

This is the reality of living with ADHD. Ideas come at us from all directions, and while it might seem like a blessing, it can quickly become overwhelming.

The Solution

I’ve started trying to take notes and “brain dump” things that come to mind. Sometimes, I use a physical notebook, a note-taking app, or even voice memos to capture those brilliant sparks before they vanish into thin air.

I then go back to them later on when I’m more focused so I can organise them.

2. Time’s Slippery Nature: Schedules Are Puzzles

The Struggle

Keeping track of time can feel like trying to grab sand. Schedules become elusive puzzles, and deadlines are like distant stars.

But here’s the twist – sometimes, hyperfocus kicks in, and hours disappear while you’re immersed in a project.

The Solution

I’ve found that using digital tools like calendars and reminders has been helpful. Having those important tasks and meetings ping on my phone means I don’t forget them.

Breaking my day into manageable chunks has also been useful. I just need to learn to be more forgiving when things don’t go as planned!

3. Hyperfocus Hurdles: The Double-Edged Sword

The Struggle

Hyperfocus is like a superpower, but it can also be a trap.

When something genuinely interests us, we can become laser-focused, often to the detriment of other tasks that need attention.

The Solution

I’ve found setting clear boundaries has been the key.

Using techniques like the Pomodoro method to ensure I switch tasks without getting stuck in the hyperfocus tunnel has been a godsend.

4. Paper Avalanche: Organised Chaos

The Struggle

Walk into an ADHD entrepreneur’s workspace, and you might see what appears to be chaos.

But here’s the secret: it’s organised chaos. Important things hide in plain sight, and while it might look messy to others, it’s our system.

The Solution

It’s something I’m still working on, but I’m starting to embrace my unique organisational style.

I just make sure I have a method for locating important documents when I need them.

5. Impatient Innovator: Waiting Is Hard

The Struggle

Waiting for things to happen at a ‘normal’ pace can feel like watching paint dry.

This impatience is rooted in a desire to see results, but it can sometimes lead to frustration.

The Solution

Patience is a skill that can be developed, so I’m giving it a go in a few ways.

Meditation, mindfulness, and reminding myself that good things take time is helping me ease my impatience.

6. Perfectionism Paradox: Striving for Excellence

The Struggle

Entrepreneurs often strive for perfection, but for ADHD entrepreneurs, this pursuit can lead to overthinking and procrastination.

Balancing the desire for excellence with the need to move forward is a constant challenge.

The Solution

This one is really tough for me, and I’m having to constantly remind myself that progress is greater than perfection.

Recognising that sometimes “good enough” is indeed good enough will hopefully keep things moving.

7. Momentum Moods: Riding the Productivity Waves

The Struggle

Some days, we’re productivity powerhouses, ticking off tasks left and right. Other days, it’s a Netflix-and-snacks marathon.

The key is embracing the ebb and flow of our energy.

The Solution

I’ve started to plan important tasks on high-energy days and reserve low-energy days for less demanding work.

8. The Overwhelm Wave: Navigating Information Overload

The Struggle

Information overload is a constant companion.

ADHD entrepreneurs can find it challenging to filter and focus amidst the noise.

The Solution

Using tools like digital folders, bookmarks, or note-taking apps is helping me organise resources for later use.

I’m also allowing myself to not be afraid to disconnect when it all gets too overwhelming.

The ADHD Entrepreneurial Strengths

Now, you might be wondering, “That sounds really tough. What’s the bright side of being an ADHD entrepreneur?”

Well, there are strengths that come with ADHD, too:

  • Thinking Outside The Box – ADHD entrepreneurs possess agile minds that leap between ideas, uncovering unconventional connections and solutions. Our ability to see possibilities where others might not allow us to craft innovative strategies and seize unique opportunities.
  • Embracing Change – ADHD entrepreneurs thrive in dynamic environments, adapting swiftly to market shifts and emerging trends. Change isn’t a barrier but an opportunity for growth. We assess situations, adjust strategies, and maintain resilience.
  • Unconventional Solutions – Our knack for unconventional problem-solving leads to breakthroughs that differentiate businesses. We approach challenges with fresh perspectives, unburdened by traditional constraints.

Embrace Your Unique Journey

ADHD isn’t a limitation; it’s a different way of seeing the world.

As entrepreneurs, we can harness our quirks as strengths. By understanding our unique traits and employing strategies to manage our challenges, we can survive and thrive in the world of business.

So, whether you’re an ADHD entrepreneur or you work with one, remember that our journey is a colourful one. Embrace the chaos, celebrate the creativity, and above all, keep moving forward.
